A three-card method for breaking through a stalled character arc
Free tarot reading tools can also work as randomized writing prompts when a character arc feels stuck. Instead of treating the cards as predictions, assign each position a clear narrative function: what the character wants, what they refuse to face, and what choice would force change.
The useful part is the constraint. Describe only visible details first—color, posture, setting, objects—then connect one detail to the character’s history. If the interpretation feels too convenient, reverse the assumption or give the symbol to the antagonist. This often produces a direction that is surprising but still belongs to the story.
Transparency: I am connected with DeckAura, the tarot resource linked above. I am sharing the exercise as a creative tool, not a spiritual claim. Have any authors here used cards, dice, image decks, or other randomizers to solve plot and character problems? What method gave you the most usable draft material?
