In an old sewage pipe, Winslow spends his nights beside a missing girl, reading intoxicating notebooks he receives from the wizard.

Winslow knows he mustn’t tell. They wouldn't understand. Stephanie isn't dead; she's only different now. What’s it matter she’s starting to smell?

However, the wizard won’t give Winslow another notebook until he meets with the mysterious Mr. Shackles, a man whom Winslow has met with before but can never remember his face.

In this mind-bending fantasy of magical realism, Winslow finds the map to the labyrinth of his mind inside the cryptic prose of the notebooks. He is addicted to the puzzle of them, but as the pieces fit together, he finds that by trying to escape into fiction, he has only discovered a secret about Stephanie he’s been hiding from himself.
